Hay River House is Your Home Away From Home! We are easy to find and located near Menomonie, Boyceville and Wheeler, Wisconsin, 1 mile off Highway 25.
When you arrive, take a breath, relax and step back in time. Front steps made by a local carpenter will welcome you onto the L-shaped porch where you can sit a spell. 10 foot long vintage blinds found tucked away in the garage rafters adorn the original windows. Once inside the house, you will notice many of the original Sears Kit House features that are still in place, such as the Douglas fir woodwork and yellow pine floors, the original plate rail in the dining room, the classic lead glass windows and the door handles.
Wallpaper from the 30’s still adorns the wide staircase leading to the second floor where the floors in the 4 bedrooms are in original condition. Exposing a bit of the brick chimney on each floor shows off bricks made by the Menomonie Brick Company. The kitchen was updated in 1947 and that cabinetry remains today with a few newly added touches. Guests exclaim, “It’s just like my grandma’s kitchen!"
Bring your own kayaks and float down the Hay River. Bicyclists and Harley riders, many scenic county roads await! Guests can enjoy a number of day adventures from horse riding to pottery and antique shops to local breweries. We are 15 miles from excellent cross country ski and snowshoe trails at Hoffman Hills Recreation Area. Right across the road, the "old corner store" feel is alive and well at The Grain Bin Market and Bakery. Fabric, bulk goods and fresh bakery items will tempt you. Grab your walking shoes and binoculars and take a walk over to the Hay River and enjoy the sounds of the water and wildlife. In seasonable weather, your host will make a campfire by the river if you like.
Breakfast is served family-style in the dining room at a mutually agreed upon time. Reading cookbooks for relaxation has been your host's hobby for years! Some of my recipes include: Breakfast Enchiladas with fresh guac and salsa, Breakfast Tacos with home made shells, Mexican bacon lattice cornbread and eggs, Breakfast Pizza, Loaded Blueberry-Walnut pancakes, Lemon-Ricotta pancakes, Classic Quiche Lorraine, and Berry Quinoa Bake. Choices may include home-baked granola, scones, and muffins, yogurt, fresh fruit, and freshly ground coffee to delight your palate. Early risers can request a "grab and go" breakfast. Cookies are fresh-baked each afternoon of your stay. Popcorn, soda, coffee, tea and juice are available 24/7. I accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten sensitive, lactose sensitive, and food alergies - just let me know.
We have angle parking on the south side of the house, conveniently located in relation to the front entry. The driveway is a circle drive so guests can easily continue around the house to exit.
The house continues to be lovingly repaired, so don't be surprised if there's a work in progress during your stay!
